If hiking is on your “to do” list when visiting New Zealand then Wanaka should be on your list of the South Island’s “must visit”. The scenery is magical and the hiking tracks are formed to make the most of the views. Most of the one day hikes in New Zealand take into account the varying levels of fitness that hikers will have and Wanaka is no exception.
The following hiking tracks are easily accessed by car from Wanaka township.
Is the most popular hike and the track gets rather busy in peak season. It is 10 km (round trip) and access is one hour’s drive from Wanaka. The scenery on the drive to the start of the track is stunning. Allow 4 – 6 hours depending on your level of fitness.
Meet New Zealand Vacations can book you a full day guided tour with one of our excellent operators. Here is some recent feedback on the walk.
Our guide, with his dry sense of humour, and just the right touch of ‘cheekiness’ proved to be a terrific and highly knowledgeable companion. As a result not only did we enjoy the walk itself and of course the opportunity to view the glacier and surrounds, but in the process we learnt so much about the local geography, native flora and fauna plus the birdlife. In addition we were highly impressed with the very tasty and generous picnic lunch provided.
Is equally as beautiful but much quieter as it is less well known, with amazing views from the top over both Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea.
Is a mostly flat hike . You will enjoy sweeping views of the valley and glaciers. The Hutt is a lovely spot to enjoy a picnic lunch. (check out some of the bakeries and delicatessens in Wanaka for scrummy locally produced picnic fare).
These are just three options of many. Do check out the http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz for other amazing experiences.
Meet New Zealand Vacations Self Drive Tours incorporate a Wanaka stop on some of their tour options (and it can be added to others). We encourage our visitors to spend 2 – 3 nights in the location so they can really enjoy what is on offer. We want you to enjoy the area and not feel rushed.
Check out our Mountains Glaciers and Rainforests tour which includes Lake Wanaka.
